What is Gabapentin (Neurontin)?
Neurontin (also known as Gabapentin) is an anticonvulsant that was developed specifically for epilepsy. In the recent years, Neurontin has been found to be also effective for other diseases such as relieving people with conditions of fibromyalgia or people who experience chronic neuropathic pain due to post-herpetic neuralgia also known as post-shingles pain and diabetic neuropathy. Aside from that, Neurontin is now also used as a medicine to treat migraines.
The mechanism of action of Neurontin is through the binding of the active ingredients onto the calcium channels that are present in the nerve cells of the spinal cord and the brain. As a result, there is a release of multiple neurotransmitters that aid in conducting messages among the nerve cells.
Specifically, Neurontin or Gabapentin prevents the release of glutamate which is a neurotransmitter that transmits mainly pain signals into the brain and the nervous system. By reducing the amount of glutamate, the pain due to neuropathic pain from a damage in the nerve functions is highly decreased.
Side effects of Neurontin
Most drugs result in having some side effects. There are common side effects depending on the drug that is used. It is important to understand that side effects are just a possible reaction of your body to the medicine. Each body is unique and has different reactions to drugs. A side effect that is experienced by one person is not necessarily true for the other. For Neurontin, some of the side effects include sleepiness, dizziness, tiredness, viral infections, fever, convulsions, jerky movements, insomnia, appetite changes, anxiety, loss of memory, tremor, irregular eye movements, vertigo, high blood pressure, impotence, facial swelling, rashes, breathlessness, decrease in white blood cell count, abnormal thoughts and increase in abnormal muscular activity.
It must be noted that the stated possible side effects above are not yet complete. You should talk to your doctor and discuss the other side effects that could occur. If you encounter any of these side effects, immediately consult your doctor too.
